Description of Raasay House Hotel & Activities

Raasay House Hotel & Activities - a spectacular location for holidays, activities and special events. Enjoy adventure, fun, wildlife and tranquillity on one of Scotland's most beautiful and unspoilt islands.

For us this isn’t just a business; our work isn’t just a job; visitors aren’t just clients. This is a family-run company, built up over 25 years by people who believe that Raasay House and the island are very special, and who want you to enjoy their magic as much as we do.

From the instructors to the MD, we’re all passionate about what we do. We’ll work hard to make sure you have the best time ever when you’re with us, and we’ll keep in touch long after you’ve gone home. We hope you’ll come back time and time again.

Our passion is of course combined with a level of professionalism you’d expect. Our instructors are well qualified, experienced and safety conscious. Our highly trained administrative team and on-site staff are accommodating, flexible and efficient

Coming to Raasay and meeting the people who live here also gives you a real insight into a small island community and a simpler, more authentic way of living, far from the fast-moving, electronic-fuelled 21st century

Archery

Close

If you don’t want to venture too far or push yourself too hard, you could try your hand at archery, a precision sport that requires a good eye and steady arm.

Canoeing

Open Canadian canoeing

A brilliant way to explore the hidden bays and rocky inlets that surround Raasay and Skye.

On an Open Canadian canoeing course, you’ll learn how to paddle solo or as part of a team, using Novacraft prospector canoes which are easy to handle, great to learn on or improve your skills. The shallow inland loch just five minutes from the house is a perfect place to learn the paddle strokes needed to tackle the sea.

With a bit of experience you’ll be ready for your very own Canadian Canoe Adventure, exploring the coastline and neighbouring islands and getting up close to the bird and sealife. We can even arrange an overnight beach camp and BBQ to round off your Raasay experience. You might even want to go for a BCU accreditation

Gorge Walking

Close

Gorge walking – or canyoning as it is sometimes known – is a hugely satisfying activity. Walking, jumping, swimming and scrambling, you will discover fantastic canyons and incredible gorges in parts of Raasay that are inaccessible to most visitors. You might even end up on the beach where the Queen used to picnic.

Wearing wetsuits, buoyancy aids and crash hats you could be making your way up a narrow gorge carved out of the land, climbing up a raging torrent, jumping into deep pools or abseiling down a waterfall. And all of it amongst spectacular scenery and wildlife. Great fun, a real challenge and impossible to stay dry!

Bushcraft

Close

Practise bushcraft in one of the world’s most accessible wild areas.

Raasay has conifer and natural birch forests, heather moorlands and miles of untracked land. Remote hill lochs have been stocked by former landowners with trout and Arctic char, providing great fishing opportunities. Raasay’s shorelines and those of its neighbouring islands are rich in shellfish and edible seaweed. Learn to distinguish between edible and inedible fungi, forage for your dinner and then learn how to light a fire without matches to cook your food, before building your own shelter for the night.

Just imagine sitting by a campfire watching the trout you just caught cooking over the flames. Don’t just dream it – do it here on Raasay!

Coasteering

Close

An exciting, adrenalin-charged activity, not for the faint-hearted

Coasteering is an exhilarating mixture of rock-climbing, scrambling, swimming and cliff jumping. No wonder it is one of our most popular activities. When you share the environment with local wildlife (otters, seals, diving sea birds) it can become a perfect day out on the coast.

Kitted out in a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and crash hat, you’ll be guided along the base of the rocky outcrops and cliffs on the shoreline in front of Raasay House before jumping off into the sea below. You’ll need teamworking skills to work out the best route around the cliffs. You’ll need a hot chocolate (or whisky for the adults) and an even hotter shower afterwards!

Mountain Biking

Close

Fun, sociable, and available all year

The island of Raasay has a unique diversity of landscapes and almost unequalled unspoilt beauty - the perfect destination for mountain biking enthusiasts of all levels. Being an island it has the advantage of very limited traffic while its shape (14 miles long and 4 miles wide) makes it especially appealing whatever your ability and level of fitness. Adult and kids bikes provided.

Within a short ride of Raasay House there are winding roads, single tracks and forest paths. Or perhaps you’d prefer sandy beaches, challenging rocky shore paths and heather covered hills. It’s all here waiting for you.

And once you’re out of the saddle, there are hot showers, deep sofas and fine whisky to help you unwind from the day’s adventures
